Changing political and economic conditions in Southern Africa are forcing a redefinition of the labour movement’s role in this region. In many cases the unions are the only organised voices opposing structural adjustment and its devastating effect on the working class. But as Suzanne Dansereau reports, unions are hampered in their task by lack of capacity and resources.
