CCAWUSA Settlement the Beginning

The bitter seven-month feud between two factions for control of the Commercial Catering and Allied Worker’s Union (CCAWUSA) ended recently with an out-of-court settlement between the two sides. Whilst the settlement must be hailed as a positive attempts by the two factions to avert a damaging split in COSATU’s third largest affiliate, it is only the beginning of the long struggle for genuine worker-led unity in the sector. In the following article Coletane Markham looks at the deeper issues underlying the dispute in CCAWUSA, and tries to draw out the implications of the dispute and its settlement for the union movement in South Africa.
