COSATU has been very active in the Pietermaritzburg crisis, developing close co-operations with UDF in the process. SALB interviewed Ezra about the role of the local Shop Stewards Council in the resistance against Inkatha vigilantes Ezra explained that altogether there are about 5000 Cosatu members in 45-50 organised factories in Pietermaritzburg. They belong to the NUMSA, FAWU CCAWUSA, PPWAWU, CAWU and TGWU.
